The Mistress Murder That Haunts Malaysia’s Former PM

She was a Mongolian translator — rumored to be pregnant with the child of Malaysia’s future Prime Minister.

In 2006, she was abducted, shot… and blown apart with military-grade C4 explosives.

Nearly twenty years later, her ghost still haunts Malaysia.

Because in 2025, her father walked into a Kuala Lumpur courtroom — demanding the case be reopened, armed with testimony that Najib Razak ordered the killing. Najib now sits in prison for another scandal… while whispers still accuse his wife, Rosmah, of knowing the truth.

This is the mistress murder Malaysia tried to erase.

Story Summary

Altantuya Shaariibuu was more than a translator. Fluent in Russian, French, and English, she navigated elite circles. In Malaysia, she became entangled with Abdul Razak Baginda, a close associate of Najib Razak — rumors later tied her even closer to the soon-to-be Prime Minister.

On the humid night of October 19, 2006, she confronted Baginda’s residence. When he refused to meet, she was intercepted — abducted by two commandos, men from elite police units. Her pleas went unheard. She was shot, bound to explosives, and detonated in the jungle — her body scattered beyond recognition.

In the years that followed, two policemen — Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri and Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar — were arrested, convicted, and sentenced to death in 2009. Baginda was acquitted. The courts never explained why a translator had to die, nor who ordered her silencing.

Decades later, the silence is cracking.

The Hidden Angle: What’s New in 2025

Altantuya’s Father Files Fresh Suit

In August 2025, Altantuya’s father, Dr. Shaariibuu Setev, lodged a judicial review application seeking to compel authorities to fully investigate a sworn affidavit from Azilah Hadri (given from death row). In that affidavit, Azilah claimed he was acting under orders from Najib Razak.

The High Court is to decide whether to force the police, the Attorney General, and other agencies to reopen or complete investigations into those claims.

Civil Damages Award — and Appeals

Back in February 2025, a Malaysian court reaffirmed a prior decision ordering the government and Abdul Razak Baginda to pay over RM 9 million in damages to Altantuya’s family.

That ruling was tied to a High Court judgment awarding RM 5 million in “vindicatory damages” in 2022, which found Baginda was “complicit” in the murder and that the government held vicarious liability.

The government and Baginda appealed the award.

Court of Appeal Defers Decision

In October 2025, the Court of Appeal deferred its decision on the appeal by the government and Baginda over the damages suit. The panel said the matter required further deliberation, and set October 27, 2025 for the next case management hearing.

This delay prolongs the courtroom struggle over whether justice for Altantuya will ever take final form.

The Price of Silence

Altantuya’s murder was never just a crime scene; it was a wound in Malaysia’s political soul. The use of C4, the refusal to examine motive, the absence of accountability for powerful actors — all point to a system built to bury inconvenient truths.

Over time, official narratives shifted. The killers were punished. Baginda walked free. The courts claimed no motive was proven. But in the shadows, whispers persisted: was Rosmah aware? Did power shield others?

Today, a father armed with silence-shattering testimony demands answers. The legal system is pushed to confront its own legacy. The richest in Malaysia — once untouchable — are being forced into courtrooms they once controlled.

The ghost of Altantuya is no longer hushed. Her story lives. Her name resurfaces.
